Spivak’s OT Heroics Propels Flyers to Second 3HL Event Title

Daniel Spivak found the back of the net with just over two minutes left in overtime as the Milton Flyers won the 3HL Guelph Games championship, their second 3HL Event title in four tournaments. The 3-2 OT win over the host Guelph Brewers added $7K to the Flyers money earnings, giving Milton a total of $16K.

“I’ll be honest, I tried to go around the goalie and he poke-checked it away from me, I just whacked it the second time,” said Spivak, the former ECHL defencemen. “I had no idea until I saw the ref’s face and he said ‘its in!’. I was like ‘Sweet! It’s over, we won and now I can finally breath.’”

A big part of the success of the Flyers has been the play of netminder Dave Davenport. The former Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and York University Lions goalie was named the 3HL Guelph Games Muscle MLK Tournament MVP for his outstanding play between the pipes.

“We try not to give up many opportunities, but when we do Davie is there for us,” said Captain Tristan Fairbarn. “He’s so quiet in the net and always in the right spot. He makes those big saves when we need them and that’s all we can ask.”

“I said it before, if you have a good goalie in this league, you have a chance to win,” said Spivak. “Today Davenport was unbelievable. Any time we came out a little slow, especially against Newmarket, he was there to bail us out. In OT, he made a huge save that allowed us to go the other way and score. If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be this far, that’s for sure.”

Davenport now has a league leading 2.37 GAA and seven wins in eight starts.

Leading the way offensively for the Flyers was Kevin Willer, who tallied one goal and four assists for five points. The former Elmira College captain and Mississippi Riverking forward (SPHL) now has 11 points (4G,7A) in nine 3HL games.

The 3HL makes it’s next stop on Saturday, March 25th in Aurora, ON for the 3HL Aurora Danglefest. Tickets are on sale now at www.3HLTOUR.com/tickets.
